Our speakers

Justin King CBE, Vice Chairman, Terra Firma

Justin was the CEO of Sainsbury’s between 2004 and 2014, where he led the business through a major turnaround which led to nine years of profit growth. Before joining Sainsbury’s, Justin was Head of Food at Marks & Spencer. He held prior roles at Asda, Haagen-Dazs, PepsiCo and Mars in a thirty year career spanning consumer goods and grocery retailing.

Justin has previously served as a director of Staples Inc and as a board member of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and was on the audit committee of both organisations. He was also a member of the UK prime Minister’s Business Advisory Group.

After his career in FMCG and Retail, Justin joined Terra Firma in 2015.  He is currently Vice Chairman and acts as an advisor to the General Partner.  In addition, he sits on the boards of Annington and Everpower.

In 2019, Justin completed the sales of the two Terra Firma businesses he chaired, Wyevale and Santander/Brighterkind, having led their successful turnarounds.

Outside of Terra Firma, Justin has been on the Public Interest Board of PWC since 2015 and joined Marks and Spencer as a Non-Executive at the start of 2019.

Also in 2019, Justin launched and now Chairs the Made by Sport (MBS) Charity with founding Ambassadors HRH, The Duke of Sussex, Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams.  MBS champions the power of sport to change young lives and works closely with the Sport for Development Coalition which represents the scores of charities and organisations that share this goal.

Justin received an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Bath, and in 2009 the University of Bath awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate of Business Administration. Justin was awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 2011.

Justin is well known for his interest in motorsport and enjoys combining his passion for cars and spending time with his family. He served as interim Chairman of the Manor racing Formula One team, overseeing its recovery from administration in 2014, and his son, Jordan, is an international racing driver.

Aarti Kapoor, Managing Director, Embode

Aarti Kapoor is the Managing Director of Embode, an independent human rights consultancy working on the ground with corporate supply chains to tackle social issues across Asia and Africa. Aarti has almost 20 years’ experience working on human rights issues, with a focus on forced labour, child labour, human trafficking, and fair recruitment. This has included positions developing national government policy in the UK, implementing programmes in Asia and carrying out strategic research assignments across the globe. Aarti is known in the sector for her analytical mind and capability to think strategically and systemically. She is qualified as a lawyer in both the UK and US and holds Masters degrees in Law and Economics, as well as Systems Leadership and Organisational Analysis.

Jessica Green, CEO & Co-Founder, Phylagen

Jessica Green is the CEO and co-founder of Phylagen, a microbiome data analytics company based in San Francisco. Dr. Green is internationally recognized for her contributions to microbiome science and technology, with highly cited articles in Nature, Science, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She co-founded the Biology and Built Environment Center at the University of Oregon and is on the Science Advisory Board at the Santa Fe Institute.

She has received numerous awards including a Blaise Pascal International Research Chair, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and a TED Senior Fellowship. Jessica received a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from UC Berkeley, an M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley, and a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCLA.

Simon McCalla, CEO, Sedex

Simon joined Sedex as Chief Executive Officer in early 2019 and is responsible for leading the strategic vision for Sedex, its members and the global Sedex team. He has 25 years of experience in retail, infrastructure and supply chain technology roles, working within companies including Adams Childrenswear, Next, Nominet, Volvo, Warner Bros and The White Company.

 

Simon is passionate about enhancing the efficiency and transparency of the supply chain and protecting the people working in it. He serves Sedex members by building and delivering the products and services to do this and be the catalyst for positive change in responsible sourcing.

Rona Starr, President & CEO, APSCA

Rona Starr is the President & CEO of the Association of Professional Social Compliance Auditors (APSCA), joining in August 2016. She oversees the organization’s development and the advancement of APSCA’s mission to enhance the professionalism and credibility of the individuals and organizations performing independent social compliance audits.

Prior to joining APSCA, Rona worked for McDonald’s for 21 years in a variety of roles. She was part of the roll out of McDonald’s social compliance program within Asia in 2002; and became the global lead in 2009.  In 2010, she gathered the audit firms used by McDonald’s together to form an advisory board to focus on improvement within the industry.  From there, numerous projects were undertaken, which included the implementation of a train the trainer program for auditors where she travelled the world to ensure calibration and continuous improvement among the service providers – which included many of the now APSCA member firms.

Rona is an accomplished and globally networked business leader with the capacity to influence at all levels of an organization. A specialist in transformational environments, she has defined expertise in risk management across emerging markets, combining a track record of success in supply chain management, administration, international business coordination and workplace compliance.

Starr has a MBA from the Australian Institute of Business.

Olivia Murphy, Sustainability Manager, Whitbread PLC

Olivia Murphy is Sustainability Manager at Whitbread PLC. Responsible for managing Whitbread’s responsible sourcing programme; including the ethical audit programme, sector engagement, commodity work, modern slavery mitigation and annual assessment of risk across the supplier base. Olivia’s passion lies in supplier engagement that goes beyond audit, working collaboratively with suppliers to understand the risks and issues that they face to create an environment of improvement.
