Building on research into corporate responses to address modern slavery carried out in 2015, the Ethical Trading Initiative and Hult International Business School are partnering again to lead research on the critical role of corporate leadership in addressing modern slavery, and the extent to which the UK Modern Slavery Act has had an impact on corporate approaches to labour rights issues.
The specific aims are to:
- Provide in-depth case studies of good practice in addressing modern slavery in supply chains, focusing on corporate practices which are having the greatest impact on improving conditions for workers at risk of modern slavery.
- Map differing perceptions among companies of what constitutes corporate leadership on tackling modern slavery. We aim to get insights on how companies identify the core components of an effective response, how they define corporate ‘leadership’ on this issue, and identify what benchmarks they would use to measure ‘leadership’ in practice.
- Provide insight on how the UK Modern Slavery Act has shaped corporate activities during the first year of its operation.
Key findings from the research will be shared in a publicly available report and will be used to develop learning materials by the Ethical Trading Initiative and Hult International Business School to influence the practices of business leaders.
