We are pleased to announce that we will shortly be publishing a new version of SMETA (Sedex Members’ Ethical Trade Audit).

SMETA has been developed by the Sedex Associate Auditor Group, through multi-stakeholder consultation, to provide a best practice reference framework for social auditing and reporting. It incorporates 3 elements:

Best practice guidance

Audit report format

Corrective action plan format

This new version covers both a 2-pillar audit (Labour Standards; Health & Safety) and a 4 pillar audit, which includes the optional pillars of Environment and Business Practices. It draws from practices defined by Sedex members and by the Global Social Compliance Programme (GSCP).

The new SMETA will be available later this month and will replace the previous version (SMETA v 2.4 Sep 2010).

SMETA is designed to meet multiple customer requirements and reduce duplication in ethical auditing. It is publicly available and is used and accepted by many organisations who are not currently Sedex members.

We are pleased to introduce our comparison document which provides guidance on the scope of the following 3 codes – SA8000, GSCP reference code and ETI base code.

Sedex supports members from a number of different countries and sectors who are exposed to multiple codes and standards. The Sedex platform enables organisations to share information about their ethical and responsible practices without needing to reference an individual code or standard.

We are experiencing an increasing number of queries about the differences between these various codes. To support these requests we have produced a comparison document which provides guidance on the scope of 3 of the most relevant codes and standards for our members – SA8000, GSCP reference code and ETI base code.

This is a Sedex document and interpretation has been used to simplify and align the language in the codes for reader clarity.
